The fundamentals of design theory

Contrast: 

Have you heard of the term “popping design”? This is the design where contrast worked and stored the picture in your memory. Contrast occurs when multiple variations of the design appear in a creative. The contrast makes a design more impactful with extra emphasis using: 

 

Balance and alignment: 

Balance refers to the right distribution of objects, colours, textures, and spaces; such as big pictures next to small ones, classic and contemporary fonts, etc. These attributes help in differentiating your brand from your competition and efficiently grab market attention. The goal that you have with a certain creative defines the balance. 

The symmetrical design offers a balance with equally weighted elements aligned on either side of a centre line. An asymmetrical design, on the other hand, uses opposite weights to create an uneven composition that has equilibrium. 

 

Proportion: 

Proportion is the size of elements concerning one another. It is the visual size and weight of elements in a creative and how they relate to each other. 

Think of a box at the bottom of your poster for ticket information or a sidebar on a website for a search bar. A right proportion can only be achieved if all elements of your design are well-sized and thoughtfully placed. Once you master alignment, balance, and contrast; proportion should emerge organically.

 

Perception: 

An idea or perception is the image of a particular brand. It can be done using the same format for headers, reusing the same colours, or images, and many more. Brand elements being repeated in a design provides a sense of familiarity that helps customers easily identify a particular brand.

For example, the widely popular brand ‘Coca-Cola’ uses the red and white colour code. Often when we come across the same colours together, the brand name comes to our mind.

 

Hierarchy: 

Hierarchy refers to the order of importance in a design. It helps the audience understand the visuals easily.  You can effectively shape or reshape a user’s mindset by logical and strategic arranging of creative elements.

For example; Billboards, Pamphlets, and Newspapers use larger elements in headlines or other important parts; to put effective emphasis that drives focused attention. 

 

Negative space: 

Negative space or white space refers to the area of a creative with no design elements. It has importance, as it creates hierarchy and organization. Viewers’ minds naturally associate ample white space around an element with importance and luxury. It tells that objects in one region are grouped separately from objects elsewhere.

 

Now that you know what design theory is, you should know how to make a difference by implementing this theory in your creativity. You should master the art of design thinking to effectively implement design theory in your work. Learn how to think from your customer’s point of view. You need to do extensive research until you get a hold of your viewers’ preferences and needs. Knowing your audience is a must. 

Don’t hesitate. Jot down your visual ideas and concepts for your design keeping your target audience in mind. After you filled your sheet with brainstorming ideas, it’s time to give it a shape. Listing everything down helps you to select design elements and materials in shaping creativity easily.

Don’t stop once you create a design, always give it a try until perfection. Working on a creative provides an immense improvement, and highlights strength areas, be it a creative that is done, or yet to be done.

The principles of design are the most important part of any design process. Without these principles, it would be very difficult for the users to understand the type of message that the designer is trying to communicate. Bad design can result in the loss of a loyal customer base, bad reviews, and serious damage to profit margins. At worst, a poorly designed product can bring an otherwise good company to its knees.
